May 2010                                          The Archives

Have you ever had the feeling you have lost a month? Not an easy thing to do when there are a total of nearly 60 greyhounds between Fen Bank and where I live in Grimsby, but nothing is impossible to a dedicated greyhound lover - and the dogs don’t seem to have noticed! One or two people have asked what happened to the April edition, and the definitive answer is – there wasn’t one! This is not to say that April didn’t happen, the calendar and quite a number of people know that it did, and Fen Bank found a decent number of homes for, joy of joys, Samuel, that mischievous bundle of love we have had for over a year and the splendidly handsome Merlin who hardly touched the sides, among others. We also took in the most beautiful stray on her last day on earth in the local dog pound - and she bless her heart has turned out to be cat friendly - and therefore certain of a home very soon!

April was also the month of major surgery one little girl came in with a terrible hock and this had to be amputated and then just as Jenny was coming up for air, another broken hock arrived and there is one more waiting to come in! so then there were two sets of vets to visit, two lots of bandaging and two enormous vet bills! Thankfully we had a generous donation from a Trust who wish to remain anonymous for one of the girls, but we had to dig deep for the other one! Meanwhile Jenny wore herself to a frazzle concreting the beds and painting the new kennel which looks magnificent now that she has had a little help from Alan Hudson who has painted with gusto for several weekends and is promising to fit the cupboards for her as well. It’s wonderful to know that all our Trustees can be relied on to pull out the stops when the Fen Bank organ is wheezing a bit!

Daphne Ledward, John and of course Muffin opened their lovely garden and Arboretum for us - and raised quite a lot of money, which was especially kind, since Bluebell was very ill at the time they needed to get everything ready, and it is a huge amount of work and it looked lovely as you will see from Sanctuary Snippets! Not to be outdone, our Chair of Trustees also took sick leave, but is thankfully clear and back in harness and we are all pleased about that! Not so good was the news that Gaynor our behind the scenes fundraiser has had a stroke and is likely to take some time to recover. Her beloved dogs are safe with us, but we are looking for a foster home for two of them. Neither are cat friendly, but otherwise perfect of course and at 8 and 10 they really don’t need to be in kennels for a long time. Both are used to living in a pack of greyhounds and used to other breeds. If you can help please ring Sandra on 01472 822979 or Jenny on 01754 820593.

As we hurtle through May several of our other dogs have also found lovely homes and we welcome Mick Fern who has joined the Fen Bank Team and who is already proving a great asset in helping our with some of our more special dogs who need a bit of help to encourage them to socialise with  other breeds.  We are all looking forward to seeing you at one of our events (check the events tab!) or coming to visit us in order to add to your family!
