March 2010 The ArchivesAt last the weather has begun to soften and the dogs can, albeit briefly, lie out in the sunshine and the coats can stay off just a little longer – how lovely! Many of our owners were still snowed in during early February and even the east of Lincolnshire enjoyed a light covering several times. Events in the kennels were just as unpredictable as the weather this month too, and we said “ au revoir” but not goodbye to Tim who has sadly had to give up the heavy work in the kennels because of health problems. He and Pauline bought the bungalow next door to us to help protect the Sanctuary and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude for all they have done for us – and will continue to do. We are extremely fortunate to have them as nearest neighbours and greyhound friends – and we will miss a valued colleague but not lose two friends- regular cups of coffee are already in supply for the people next door! We advertised for a replacement person and received 59 applications! Finally we managed a shortlist of 7 and Debra Perham who has lots of animal experience and is very adept at dealing with the public has joined us for 20 hours a week, and is already part of the ( Girl Power) team. Mr Muffin, take note! The quarterly Trustees Meeting brought another unexpected loss when Denise Clark and Joyce Owen whose connection to the Sanctuary goes back 10 years, and who have been Trustees for the past four years, decided that because of a complete change in family circumstances and increased working commitments, they were unable to give the time they felt we needed and regretfully resigned. They have been wonderful friends to the Sanctuary and they will be greatly missed, although like Tim they will stay in touch. Paul Bryan (owner of the wonderful Peter and an enthusiastic fund raiser) will step in to replace them very shortly. Four lucky dogs, Tigger, Twiggy, Peggy and Lizzie, all went to new homes as did the adorable little puppy who came in just weeks before, leaving Sadie ( Jenny’s terrier) forlorn! But to the great relief of Billy who prefers the quiet life in the house. Sadly two of our nicest dogs, Treacle and Sid were returned- and promptly gave each other a very nasty tummy upset which required Jenny to go into barrier nursing mode for over a week. They are both fully recovered now and no- one else caught whatever it was! We have also been asked to find a new home for Mabel and Josie two inseperable young sisters who have been in their present home for two years- they are gorgeous dogs and hopefully a new owner will come forward before they have to come back into kennels – cat and chicken friendly! The oldies are grateful for the change in the weather and although Woody had a wobbly patch, he is again bright eyed and healthy and looking forward to the Spring - as are we! The new kennel is a step nearer to completion and once the weather improves we will be looking for volunteers to come and paint the outside. Hopefully the dogs will be in residence by April! It has cost a lot more (by about £8,000.00) than we anticipated, so please support the brick appeal if you haven’t already done so- We do need help with the costs!! Sandra |
