Say NO to Greyhound Racing in China |
The Greyhound Board of Ireland and the Irish Department of Agriculture are in talks with the Chinese to export Greyhounds to the Chinese Republic in order to assist them in setting up Greyhound racing. Fact 1. The Chinese eat dogs Fact 2. There is documentary evidence (on the internet) and pictures that prove dogs are clubbed to daze them, skinned alive in the markets of China and then killed by slashing the jugular , for their purchasers to take home and cook. Fact 3. There are no animal welfare organisations in China nor any laws to prevent the abuse of domestic and wild animals. Fact 4. The Irish Minister of Agriculture is on record as saying it is not Ireland’s business to attempt to control the welfare of dogs in other countries and it is up to these countries to use their own legislative systems to support welfare of greyhounds. If it didn’t work in Spain what chance have the poor dogs got in Korea or China? Would activists even be allowed in the country? Fact 5. This will happen unless we all protest and keep up the pressure. The Greyhound industry in Ireland is worth 500 million euros and 40 million in exports- and Ireland is in recession. All the Irish Welfare groups are protesting , Dogs Trust and all the leading Dog Charities are doing the same here. Even the Greyhound Trainers Associations in this country are getting involved, so horrified are they at the implications for the dogs. Sample letter Sir, There is international outrage and dismay at the recent visit of Chinese entrepreneurs to the Bord na gCon and the implications of this for the export of Irish greyhounds to China. We understand that the Department of Agriculture regulates the transportation of Greyhounds and has indicated it feels no moral responsibility for the pain, suffering and merciful death these animals will endure in a country known for its entire disregard of animal welfare. The action proposed is in contravention of the recently drafted Welfare of Greyhound Bill in Ireland and is shocking to all civilised people. China is the main source of 2 million dogs and cats killed for their fur. If Ireland exports Greyhounds to a place where it is already known that dogs are put to death in the most inhumane way imaginable, then it will knowingly be trading in cruelty and Ireland can no longer be regarded as a civilised society. Have the Irish Authorities learned nothing from the shame of Irish dogs on the Spanish and Italian tracks? Please use your best efforts for these noble animals who are an internationally recognised symbol of Ireland. Ireland is a major exporter of Greyhounds, we wish it was not so, but this latest proposed action will bring great shame on Ireland and will adversely affect English attitudes. There must be seen to be standards in any civilised society. Yours etc. |
